Until June 18th 2023, the public can enjoy a mini beach setup in the heart of Esch-sur-Alzette for free. And, most importantly, ride an artificial wave.

Since May 27th and until June 18th 2023, an Ibiza vibe fills the air in Esch. Place des Remparts has transformed into an urban beach where sand, lounging chairs, and a cocktail bar await those in need of a holiday. It's also where surfing enthusiasts, both young and old, can try their hand at taming an artificial wave.

"We wanted to give people a bit of a 'beach feeling,'" explains Cynthia Trinjean from the Event Management Department of the City of Esch, "and offer something different. It's the first time we've done this here in Esch. And there are many people who can't afford to go away. Now they can come here and enjoy the sun, sand, and surfing."

This free event, called "Summer in the City," offers a unique experience, allowing people to practice bodyboarding on a static wave, open to everyone for three weeks. On-site registration (free) is required to enjoy this activity.

"We are supervised by instructors," emphasizes Bernard Vanderheyde, responsible for supervision. "Safety is a top priority for us here in Esch-sur-Alzette. We love welcoming children from 6 years old, every half-hour. So, the first session starts at noon, then at 12:30, and so on."

Up to two people can surf simultaneously on the wave for 30 minutes.

The wave is reserved for school children on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12 pm to 4 pm, while on Sundays and other weekdays, from 12 pm to 8 pm, it's open to the general public. On Fridays and Saturdays, surfing sessions continue until 10 pm, accompanied by musical entertainment and catering services. Showers, changing rooms, and a security team are available to the public.
